Artist's Statement

Painting is simultaneously a form of meditation and prayer. Through my focused attention on each subject, I dive deep into the understanding of color and form in every painting, while fielding my own steady stream of personal thoughts, expectations and hopes for the work. In the process, I inevitably discover aspects of both the subject and myself, and the relationships present between us increase with every hour at the easel. It is this connection, this everlasting interaction with the natural world, that I seek in every painting. It is my hope that the search for this core comes through when the paint dries, and continues to resonate with those who view my work.

My recent work stems from one of my great loves, birding. I find birds to be endlessly fascinating. The variety of species in the avian kingdom is vast, and the accompanying universe of specialized, unique behaviors and visual beauty enchants me. My recent paintings are an exploration of the mysteries inherent in these creatures, and through attention to beak, feather, and wing, I seek to understand and reveal them.
